En danse classique indienne, l\u2019interpr\u00e8te est suppos\u00e9 \u00ab se mouvoir en direction \u00bb du public : abhinaya<\/em>, mot sanskrit d\u00e9signant la technique d\u2019expressivit\u00e9, signifie litt\u00e9ralement \u00ab geste vers \u00bb le spectateur. Mais en p\u00e9riode de pand\u00e9mie, le mouvement le plus appropri\u00e9 que l\u2019on puisse ex\u00e9cuter pour l\u2019autre est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment de prendre de la distance : ce sont les \u00ab gestes barri\u00e8res \u00bb. Gestes qui rapprochent, gestes qui \u00e9loignent : la danse peut-elle les r\u00e9concilier ?<\/p>\n

Cette courte cr\u00e9ation fait appel au vocabulaire gestuel extr\u00eamement codifi\u00e9 de la danse Odissi, tout en lui donnant un sens nouveau et une port\u00e9e actuelle. Elle a rencontr\u00e9 un tr\u00e8s large succ\u00e8s d\u2019audience et de critique : apr\u00e8s avoir fait le tour du monde via les r\u00e9seaux sociaux, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 reprise comme spot de sensibilisation officiel sur les cha\u00eenes de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision publiques indiennes.<\/p>\n

Danse mill\u00e9naire, l\u2019Odissi s\u2019est perp\u00e9tu\u00e9e notamment gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 de somptueuses repr\u00e9sentations de poses sculpt\u00e9es en haut-relief dans les temples de l\u2019Inde m\u00e9di\u00e9vale. Ces instantan\u00e9s fig\u00e9s dans la pierre, qui se r\u00e9f\u00e8rent \u00e0 certaines pratiques corporelles \u00e9sot\u00e9riques, frappent par l\u2019impression de mouvement qui s\u2019en d\u00e9gage.<\/p>\n

Pour mettre en lumi\u00e8re le sens de ces pratiques, Mahina Khanum et Avisha\u00ef L\u00e9ger-Tanger ont ramen\u00e9 la danse Odissi dans les temples m\u00e9di\u00e9vaux qui l\u2019ont vu fleurir, dans la r\u00e9gion indienne de l\u2019Odisha. L\u00e0, au creux de la nuit, ils ont utilis\u00e9 diff\u00e9rents objets lumineux, en les d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant rapidement devant l\u2019appareil photo pour dessiner ces tra\u00een\u00e9es de lumi\u00e8re surnaturelles (technique dite du \u00ab light painting \u00bb).<\/p>\n

Plus qu\u2019un projet photographique, #LightsOfOdisha est un manifeste en faveur du patrimoine culturel et architectural d\u2019une r\u00e9gion indienne d\u00e9laiss\u00e9e. C\u2019est aussi un cri de ralliement artistique dont se sont empar\u00e9s les acteurs locaux. En 2019, #LightsOfOdisha a donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 un atelier participatif rassemblant acteurs de la pr\u00e9servation du patrimoine de l\u2019Odisha, danseurs, light-painters et photographes venus s\u2019initier \u00e0 cette fusion in\u00e9dite de leurs arts.<\/p>\n

Cette cr\u00e9ation explore un th\u00e8me de la mythologie hindoue \u00e9voquant le pouvoir de l\u2019identification et de la projection mentale. Krishna, le dieu s\u00e9ducteur qui m\u00e8ne la danse, entra\u00eene personnellement chacun(e) des danseurs(ses) qui prennent part \u00e0 la ronde, formant un couple fantasm\u00e9 avec chacun(e) d\u2019entre elles (eux). La relation amoureuse, sous toutes ses connotations, est ici employ\u00e9e comme m\u00e9taphore de l\u2019aspiration humaine \u00e0 fusionner avec le divin.<\/p>\n

Cette chor\u00e9graphie, capt\u00e9e en vid\u00e9o \u00e0 360\u00b0 et destin\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00eatre visionn\u00e9e dans un casque de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 virtuelle, place le spectateur au centre de la ronde. Elle l\u2019invite \u00e0 projeter son regard sur le\/la danseur.se de son choix, lui permettant ainsi, en quelque sorte, de mener la danse \u00e0 sa guise.<\/p>\n

Seule sur une sc\u00e8ne nue, la devadasi (danseuse sacr\u00e9e) raconte les hauts faits et les frasques des dieux, incarnant tous les personnages \u00e0 la fois et dessinant le d\u00e9cor par la seule puissance suggestive de ses mouvements. C\u2019est ainsi que se con\u00e7oit le r\u00e9cital de danse id\u00e9al d\u2019apr\u00e8s le Natya Shastra, trait\u00e9 de danse-th\u00e9\u00e2tre du d\u00e9but de notre \u00e8re qui continue de marquer l\u2019esth\u00e9tique de la danse classique indienne. Vingt si\u00e8cles plus tard, ces codes demeurent, mais leur signification s\u2019estompe, au risque de laisser sur sc\u00e8ne des chor\u00e9graphies amput\u00e9es de leur sens.<\/p>\n

Vingt si\u00e8cles et des poussi\u00e8res se propose de r\u00e9veler l\u2019imaginaire foisonnant qui surgit derri\u00e8re chaque geste de la danse Odissi. Autour de l\u2019interpr\u00e8te, toujours soliste, un monde fantastique prend forme en hologrammes et s\u2019anime avec elle ; un d\u00e9cor tout en lumi\u00e8re, hommage \u00e0 la po\u00e9sie de la danse Odissi autant qu\u2019\u00e0 ses origines spirituelles.<\/p>\n

Bambous et Merveilles nous emm\u00e8ne \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte des rives du Golfe du Bengale, terres rurales fr\u00e9quemment balay\u00e9es par les ouragans. Il met en sc\u00e8ne une jeune paysanne confront\u00e9e \u00e0 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de tirer le meilleur parti de la seule plante qui r\u00e9siste \u00e0 la force des vents : le bambou. Une plante qui devient l\u2019instrument de sa renaissance, et au-del\u00e0, du retour \u00e0 la vie d\u2019un monde \u00e9teint et r\u00e9sign\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Bambous et Merveilles rend hommage \u00e0 l\u2019extraordinaire tradition des troubadours de l\u2019Inde m\u00e9di\u00e9vale, artistes voyageant de village en village pour pr\u00e9senter leurs pi\u00e8ces de th\u00e9\u00e2tre dans\u00e9. Pour mieux soutenir leur narration, ils pouvaient s\u2019appuyer sur des repr\u00e9sentations imag\u00e9es, rouleaux de toiles peintes dans un style caract\u00e9ristique que l\u2019on appelle \u201cPattachitra\u201d.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est ce prodigieux amalgame d\u2019arts et de techniques – entre chant, danse, musique, peinture et conte – que nous ressuscitons dans un format num\u00e9rique.
